What is there to do in Sandpoint? When you first arrive and take everything in you see the lake, lots of mountains, and many opportunities. Our local recreation giant is Schweitzer Mountain Resort. Mountain biking, hiking, and games fill the summer. Alpine and cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and tubing in the winter make Schweitzer one of the premier year round destinations in the northwest.
Lake Pend Oreille is a magnificent and enormous lake. Our lake is 65 miles long and over 1000 feet deep in some areas, making it the 5th deepest lake in the USA. Water activities abound, ranging from speedboats to wakeboards to everything in between. Sailing is also very popular in Sandpoint and there are weekly opportunities to put up your mast. Kayaking in the various rivers and streams is a wonderful leisure activity.
Take off your shoes and jump in! The Long Bridge Swim is an amazing event that attracts over 700 swimmers to take on the 1.76 mile race. Our Scenic Half Marathon and Chafe 150 bike ride also make incredible warm-ups for triathlon contestants.
With two golf courses in Sandpoint, including a Jack Nicklaus signature course, and over 20 courses within a two-hour drive, anyone ready to hit the links can be assured their skill level can be matched.
Our beautiful state parks allow for great camping. Whether you have a one-person tent or a 30-foot RV, we have parks and campgrounds to accommodate everyone. If you plan ahead, you can reserve your spot at a campground located on the shores of Lake Pend Oreille or the Pend Oreille River.
Hiking in the wilderness is one of the favorite pastimes in our area. The Friends of Scotchman's Peaks offers guided hikes and a friendly group of people to enjoy the wilderness with. The vast national forests make backpacking a wonderful experience for those individuals ready to test their survival skills and truly rough it for a night or two.
Love your horse? Bring them too! There is every opportunity to get them some exercise and see the entire wilderness on horseback.
